Meeting Notes:

  • EEBB Symposium Committee
    • Coordinators to fill 4 positions.
    • Keynote speaker: want someone who is Evolutionary based.
      • Also, would be important to represent women. All past speakers have been men.
  • Guidelines for student mentoring
    • Email sent out by Tracey, to get info via poll.
      • What a mentor/grad program director/mentor/etc. should do…
    • What happens with this document that the task force is assembling?
      • It will be updated on training and general information.
        • This will not be enforced. The information will be available for reference for PIs and students to make sure fulfilling requirements.
  • Fundraising
    • Bake sale on campus
      • Need a University Bank Account, which we don’t have.
      • Tons of rules that apply to such an event.
      • Probably not worth doing this on campus,
    • The Loft (the bar that hosts us for Bio on Tap) is cool with food being sold there.
      • So, a bake sale could work at the Loft!
    • Dodge Ball Tournament
      • People pay $5 to enter the tournament
      • Rent gym for the night: ~$30/hour
      • Potential combination with EEBB Olympics
  • Kay Holekamp: EEBB Director
    • Stepping down from EEBB Director (Aug. 15th). Wants to get new blood in the program.
    • Conversation with Dr. Tom Getty to discuss external hire would be best.
    • If we have ideas on who internally would be good or bad for the position, we should tell Kay, so she can talk to them about the position.
    • Who we want: A high-profile scientist and who cares about the grad students.
      • This person also really needs to be in a tenured position but whether they are associate or full professor isn’t as important, just that they have tenure already.
      • Need someone here in MSU, not at KBS. Too difficult between campuses. But would anyone from KBS be interested in the position?
  • Kenna
    • Proposed external hire in meeting with new Natural Science Dean.
    • Talked the Dean through what EEBB does and how involved are other programs that are a part of EEBB.
    • Getting someone here who isn’t already here at MSU would help us bring in funding for EEBB.
    • Position EEBB to take the role of BEACON since BEACON is ending.
    • To do the external hire, we really need to show that EEBB is both already successful and is also ready to go in a new and exciting direction.
    • Benefits of external hire: a lot of bargaining power coming in to ask for funding. Also, less biased to existing departmental programs and current faculty. Also, won’t be a person who has spent their whole career here in MSU.
      • Caveat: this whole process can take 1 year or so to sort out in entirety.
    • Suggested creating a database that EEBB alumni could use when looking at jobs in the future.
  • Student/GSO discussion
    • How can students leverage an external hire?
      • Outline it in a bulleted list and send to Kay and then to Dean.
    • Internal hire from IBIO or PLB or any other EEBB department would be fine with the collective GSO, as long as they meet all of our requirements.
    • What is the structure of the search committee and how many students would be representative on this committee?
      • 2 students. Potentially Kenna, Ani, Mau, and/or someone else.
    • Who is on executive community?
      • PLB, IBIO, Fisheries and Wildlife, Computer Science, Philosophy, etc.
      • Faculty Representatives (usually one or more from each department):
        • Charles Ofria
        • Fred Dyer
        • Kim Scribner
        • Andy Jarosz
        • Laura Smale
        • Mark Eric Benbow
        • Jason Gallant
        • Kay Holekamp
        • Kay Gross
        • Richard Kobe
  • Student discussion about EEBB Director Search

To enable students to speak freely, few notes were recorded during this time

    • Probably beneficial to EEBB to absorb many of the parts of BEACON and fill that void.
      • Would benefit EEBB and MSU broadly
    • Send a letter to the dean from the grad student body expressing our thoughts on the EEBB Director search
      • How EEBB plays into people’s decisions to come to MSU
      • Role of EEBB in connecting departments and colleges across MSU
      • Training through EEBB is beneficial (courses, etc.)
      • Document history or success with EEBB students
